Day 119: Lieu

I’m terrible at keeping my apartment in good order. So every once in a while I have someone come and help me transform it from a disaster zone back to an orderly living space.

I’ve known Lieu for about five years – she’s 74 and still keeps an active life. Sweet and motherly, she comes in and whips my apartment into shape. Along with her vacuum and cleaning supplies, she often brings something for me. She’s brought from flowers to canned peppers to Vietnamese delicacies. This time she brought me a Vietnamese wonton style soup.

When people take the time to do nice things for you, like bring you a home cooked meal, the least we can do is take the time to write them a handwritten note thanking them for their thoughtfulness.

Day 119

Lieu

It was so nice to see you today. Thank you very much for the homemade Vietnamese soup – I can’t wait to try it. That was very thoughtful. Maybe someday you teach me how to make it!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Reed

Day 111: Gary Fish, Deschutes Brewery

My favorite brewery is 2,690 miles from my home in Bend, Oregon. I figured they should make their way into my 365 letters, right? Cheers!

Day 111

Dear Gary,

We met briefly back in June of 2011 here in Washington, DC at SAVOR Craft Beer festival because I won free tickets after I wrote a letter to the Washington Post requesting free tickets based on the fact that it would be the only place I would find Deschutes here in DC.

Day 111-2That was then. Now Deschutes is starting to pop up here in Washington….at RFD’s, Nando’s Peri Peri, Founding Farmers, Arrowine, Lost & Found – even Whole Foods. This is making my life better and I wanted you to know that we here in D.C. appreciate it very much!

If there is ever anything I can do to help you and Deschutes here in DC, please let me know.

Cheers,
Reed

P.S. I’m planning a big party in January of 2016 – I’d love for you to join us and have lots of Deschutes on tap!

Day 106: Kristen

Have you ever served on a home owners association board? I did it for three years and can tell you that it can be a thankless job – and that’s not even the right word since you don’t get a dime for all of your hard work.

I’m fortunate to have a great president of our condo association. I ran into her earlier this week and it reminded me that I should send her a note telling her how much I appreciate her service. Do you know someone who is volunteering their time for the benefit of others? Drop them a note to let them know you appreciate them.

Day 106

Kristen,

It was nice running into you earlier this week. I wanted to drop you a note to let you know how much I, and surely others in the building, appreciate your leadership on the condo board. I know how much time and effort you put into it.

Thank you!
Reed

P.S. I really would like to find time for dinner or drinks. Are you and Kevin around the next two weeks?

Day 96: Lianne

Another note to one of the companies I got to work with recently on social media narrative. Lianne is the GM and Owner of Nido’s Ristorante in Frederick, MD. I think I ate there many years ago and it’s possible too because it’s been around for almost 30 years – longer than any other downtown restaurant in this charming business district.

Lianne took over the restaurant last year. Like any new owner, she has creative ideas but is very sensitive to the fact that this trattoria has been a long history. This is a place where the chef has been there since it opened and two of the servers have nearly 20 years under their aprons – very impressive.

My only disappointment is that I visited Nido’s while it was closed. The next time, I’ll make sure to be there for dinner!

Another handcrafted liner I put into this envelope.

Another handcrafted liner I put into this envelope.

Lianne,

It was great to meet you last month, learn about Nido’s, and discuss your narrative for social media. I hope our meeting was helpful. I thought I would check in and see how things were going. If I can ever be of any assistance, please let me know.

Reed

P.S. I look forward to dining at Nido’s next time I am in Frederick!

Day 91: Karin

Day 91-3You really get to know someone when travel with them. When we go on vacation, we choose who are traveling companions are, but when we travel for work we often don’t have a choice. So when you travel with a work colleague who you really like, it makes the trip that much more enjoyable.

I arrived at her home in Bethesda to pick her up for our drive to Pennsylvania. After her dogs gave their approval, I made my way into the foyer. Her daughter Carolyn was by her side, her eyes heavy holding back tears. Karin had been traveling for work a lot recently and now I was making her mother miss another night at home. My heart became heavy, remembering how I felt when my dad would leave for long business trips when I was about Carolyn’s age. I’d cry while I waved goodbye to him at the airport.

I didn’t know Karin very well before this trip, but I really enjoyed spending time with her. She’s smart, interesting and very easy to talk with. I felt bad about Carolyn, but hopefully she will like this little polar bear.

Day 91-2

Karin,

Vitaj doma! I hope you had a wonderful trip to Slovakia.

Day 91I wanted to thank you for taking time to travel with me to PA last week. Spending 4 hours in a car can seem like an eternity – but you made the time go by quickly and I enjoyed very much the opportunity to get to know you better. Here’s a little something for Carolyn to keep her inspired for your trip to see polar bears this fall.

Best,
Reed

P.S. And thank you for the Swiss chocolates, they were delicious!
