Day 259: Enrique Peña Nieto, President of Mexico

Today is the 205th anniversary of the beginning of Mexico’s war of independence from Spain. I thought I would drop Mexico’s president a note to send my best wishes on the anniversary and also take advantage of the opportunity to find out who President Peña Nieto likes in our upcoming presidential election. I’ve got a feeling it’s not Trump, given his rather salty remarks about our neighbors to the south.

Day259

Mr. President,

I wanted to send you a letter to wish you and all of Mexico well today, the 16th of September, on the anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Mexico.

I lived for one year in the esteemed metropolitan city of Guasave, Sinaloa when I was a junior in high school – similar to the year you spent at Denis Hall Junior High in Maine. I love Mexico and the Mexican people.

I would be interested to know which 2016 candidate for president in the United States you feel is the best.

Kind regards from Washington, D.C.,
Reed Sandridge

P.S. I also studied at Tec de Monterrey (for one semester), but I was at the Mazatlan campus, which I don’t believe is at the same level as the Monterrey campus where you studied, but it was still an amazing experience.

Day 189: Beth

Day 189-3

Fighting Pandas 2011

Once a week during the dog days of summer I head down to the National Mall to play softball with some colleagues from work. It’s a lot of fun, but we’re not exactly making the sports highlights at night. Actually, that’s not true. One time we did when Bryce Harper showed up to pinch hit for the other team. You can check out the video here.

Anyway, one of my coworkers, Beth, said that the reason she has not come to cheer the team on is that she has never received an official invitation and she doesn’t know where the games are played. Done. See you at the games Beth!

Day 189

Elizabeth,

You are cordially invited to join the Fighting Pandas softball team as they battle their way to the 2015 Green League Softball Playoffs. Your attendance is requested at the National Mall for the following events:

Monday July 13 vs. Global Swarming
Tuesday July 21 vs. CLAW
Tuesday July 28 vs. TNC Naturals

All games have a scheduled start time of 6pm and generally do not start on time. Attire is “panda casual”. Cold beverages are available for those who play or cheer. Cheerleaders feel free to use the following phrases of encouragement:

Let’s go <insert name here>!
Good eye, good eye!
That was a helluva poke!
Shake it off, you’ll get ‘em next time!

Note: Please refer to Evan Walker only as “Coach” and never look him directly in the eyes.

Day 87: Patricia

Today’s letter is to my friend Patricia who bought me my favorite set of personalized stationery. It’s made by Crane & Co. – for those of you who are not paper geeks like me, Crane is a legend in the paper business. They’ve been crafting fine paper products in New England since before we won our independence from Britain -yeah, a really long time.

Day 87-3A little over four years ago Patricia gave me this wonderful box of personalized stationery. As I mention in the letter, the beauty of such a gift is that it lasts a long time and you can celebrate your friendship with the person who gave you the gift every time you sit down to compose a letter. I like that about it. Every time I write a letter on this stationery I remember her and her generous and thoughtful gift.

Day 87-2

Dear Patricia,

I’m writing you this letter from Northside Social – half expecting to see you walk in the door any minute. I’m pretty sure that you introduced me to this spot – it’s exceptional. I just had a cappuccino and the egg and sausage sandwich – delicious!

Day 87I wanted you to know that I love this stationery that you gave me. I don’t use it often – just for special occasions. Times when I want to make an uncommon impression – the last time was on Jan. 2nd when I wrote our new mayor Muriel Bowser. Giving fine stationery is a thoughtful gift – it lasts a long time and allows the recipient to reflect on their friendship every time they sit down to write something important.

Let’s get together soon – I know that your scheduled is about to become unhinged and you’ll be sucked into the vortex for the next 8 months.

Reed

P.S. Glad to hear your ‘hood is getting a coffee shop – even if it isn’t as cool as Northside Social – it’s better than nothing.

Day 70: Leigh Anne & Sean Tuohy

TuohyBookMost people are familiar with the film The Blind Side – the movie based on Michael Lewis’ book about NFL football tackle Michael Oher and his journey to professional football. Part of that story is him being adopted by Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy who live in Memphis, TN.

In 2010 Leigh Anne and Sean wrote their own book In a Heartbeat: Sharing the Power of Cheerful Giving. One day my brother called me and said that his mother-in-law had mentioned that I was mentioned in the book. I got a copy and sure enough I’m mentioned in regards to my Year of Giving project. Pretty cool.

I’ve always meant to thank them – so here goes. By the way, I just read this week that Oher signed a $2.5 million deal with the Carolina Panthers. I hope he has a great season for them – they could sure use a good blocker on their offensive line.

Day 70

Dear Leigh Anne and Sean,

For several years I’ve meant to send you a note to thank you for your thoughtful mention of my Year of Giving project in your book In a Heartbeat. It was a pleasant surprise to come across.

Your personal story is inspiring and I’m looking forward to reading your forthcoming book.

All the best to you and thank you for everything you do for your community and for others.

Reed

PS. I recall that you own some Taco Bells – I sure hope that you’re offering the Sriracha Quesarito down there!

Day 38: Aunt Betty and Uncle Larry

About a year ago I received a wonderful handwritten letter from my Aunt Betty – one of my Mom’s sisters. She is a thoughtful letter-writer and I thought I would drop her and my Uncle Larry a note to say hello. They use email and Facebook, but I think they still really enjoy sending and receiving handwritten letters.

Year of Letters-5

Dear Aunt Betty & Uncle Larry,

Just a note to say hello and let you know that I’m thinking about you. Work and some side projects have been keeping me busy. I enjoy it all though. I just got back from a work trip to Florida – not a bad time of year to go there!

Ryan and I are planning to head to TN at the end of February to continue working on getting Sue’s house ready for sale. Hopefully we can stop by and visit with you all.

Also – I’ve got a little project of collecting old family recipes. Maybe you have some that you would like to share for the collection. I love your bran muffins and I know Ryan is a huge fan of your oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

I hope that you are doing well and I look forward to seeing you later this month. I’ll call you to let you know exact dates.

Love,
Jason (most of my family call me Jason – Reed is my middle name)
